The Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, said the government was committed to refurbishing the roads across the region.
He was responding to a media publication that decried the state of the local roads.
The commissioner said citizens of Lagos will continue to enjoy the commitment of the State Government to having high quality infrastructure.
“Government is committed to building 21st century road infrastructure. In this regard, it has put in motion a process of revamping the infrastructure of the state under the Strategic Inner Road Development Programme,” Hamzat explained.
Over 1 000 roads have been identified in the current year’s programme.
Hamzat added that the government had identified roads that are of high traffic bearing capacity.
Major link roads would receive priority followed arterial roads.
“We have quite a number of road projects in progress within Oshodi. They include Oyetayo, Brown, Church, Kike Adeyemi and Adisa Ajibulu Streets (with Bridge component). Apart from these, our Sister Agency, the Public Works Corporation (PWC) in the last one year, have worked on 39 roads within the old Oshodi-Isolo LG,” Hamzat said.
He added, “More specifically, it is to be stated that when the level of disrepair of a particular road makes it rather a waste of funds to maintain then only palliative measure are applied before the commencement of the upgrade and rehabilitation of such roads as we have demonstrated across the entire state,” he explained.
Hamzat blamed the state of the roads on misuse by the public.
“The conditions of the roads, just like so many across the state, are as a result of our road use culture which remains quite poor. Furthermore, blocked drains are as a result of our habit of throwing waste in the drains.
Again, there are those who illegally cut the tarred roads and those who dump petroleum products and water on the roads. It is all these habits and attitude that we must work on in order to protect the infrastructure.”
